The Numbers are 'RAACing' Up... (sorry about that)
Predictably, reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) is a little like early COVID; you cannot tell when the numbers will stop rising, but chances are they will rise for some time yet to come.
The latest Department for Education (DfE) data shows that 231 schools are affected by RAAC. The number of schools has risen steadily since early Summer when the DfE anticipated closures on 52 sites. Construction News (CN) states that, to date, the cost of temporary classrooms is £35M. Furthermore, CN reports that more than 100 schools must be rebuilt.
And RAAC's not the only problem...
Buckton Fields Primary School
Meanwhile, due to safety fears, three new 'modular' schools will also be demolished and rebuilt. The schools affected are Sir Frederick Gibberd College in Essex, Haygrove School in Somerset, and Buckton Fields Primary School in Northampton. Caledonian Modular built the schools under the DfE's Modern Methods of Construction Framework. Given Caledonian Modular's financial collapse, it seems unlikely that the DfE will have any redress. It's understood that the two Secondary Schools alone cost £38M.
Progress at Stanmore College
Proposals at Stanmore College
Last month, Contractors Bouygues made a planning application for five new blocks at Stanmore College. The redevelopment, designed by Jestico + Whiles, will include a state-of-the-art gym, health and wellbeing studios, and dance/yoga studios. A decision is anticipated as early as 15th January. Stanmore is one of 16 institutions where, using its Framework Contractors, the Department for Education is delivering projects on behalf of Further Education colleges.
New City College Goes Greener!
New City College has started a project to introduce low-carbon heating to its Redbridge campus. Work has begun to replace the gas boilers with air-source heat pumps. The project coincides with the college's Commendation for Sustainable Development at the 2023/24 AoC Beacon Awards. NCC is one of the five colleges that have received this status.
